Description

Staghorn sumac, or Rhus typhina, is identified by the red fruit clusters – eating fresh is a rare delight. They melt, with practically no seed or center, and a pungent sweet tangy pop. They are called staghorn due to the likeness – the bracts presumably resemble  the velvety antlers of a male deer (stag), hence the name of “staghorn.”

Sumac berries also have a long history as an herbal remedy. Pioneers treated coughs, sore throats and fevers with sumac, while certain tribes of American Indians used these berries to treat reproductive problems, stomachaches, and wounds. Today, many Middle Eastern cultures still use sumac over vinegar or lemons – and have it in shakers on the table to season their favorite foods in much the same way salt and pepper are common settings in the US.

This listing is for the berries attached to stems as shown. They are relatively easy to shake loose and process, but store nicely as full bract.
