Winecup Flowers & Leaves – Fresh*
Description
Winecups, also known as Purple Poppy Mallow Flower (Callirhoe involucrata), is a low-growing herb, native to central North America, was once widely used by the Dakota people to ease bronchial congestion. The edible leaves are used to thicken soups and stews, similar to sassafras leaves. The bright fuchsia flowers lend a pop of color to any dish. The roots are also edible and said to taste like sweet potatoes, and may be available upon special request.
Poppy mallow is not a poppy, but it is a mallow, belonging to the hibiscus family – or Malvaceae – which is represented across the world with great diversity.
It naturally grows in dry prairies, but tolerates moist soil. The flowers are very attractive and fragrant but only 2-21/2 inches in diameter. Purple poppy mallow blooms in early summer through to early fall.
